Lukas Podolski scored the only goal of the game to help his team win the Cup
Lukas Podolski managed to score the unique goal of the match as his team Galatasaray beat rival Fenerbahce to win the Turkish Cup for the third season in a row.
The game, however, was quite average with both teams fearing to make a mistake that could give away a goal. The only goal of the match came in the 33rd minute when Podolski managed to divert a ball that was going wide into the net. Indeed, Jason Denyar appeared to have missed the target but the former Arsenal player reacted well in order to score the goal that will give his team the advantage.
Galatasaray was more than content to sit back after the goal as they waited for Fenerbahce to attack them. Fenerbahce will struggle to create occasions in the match, and they became increasingly frustrated with the way the match was going.
The Fenerbahce coach tried to make changes at the break in order to motivate his team, but the performance on the pitch did not change that much. Indeed, he will even replace former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie since he was ineffective on the pitch.
Chances were very rare in the second half, and the best ones came to Fenerbache. Nani was the provider on two occasions but once the crossbar will save the Galatasaray keeper while the second opportunity will be wasted by a Fenerbahce striker.
In the closing stage of the game, Nani will be sent off after having sarcastically applauded the referee. He thought that the referee was favoring the opposing team and made his protest known.
The match ended 1-0 for Galatasaray. The win ensures that the Turkish side qualifies for the Europa League, but they will be penalized under the Financial Fair Play rule.
