Lukas Podolski ended his international career on a high note
Lukas Podolski decided to hang up his international playing boots on March 22 of 2017 during Germany´s friendly match against England which concluded with the team of Joachim Low claiming a 1-0 triumph.
The only goal of this friendly match was netted by Lukas Podolski himself as the 32 year old forward scored in his last competitive match at the global stage.
Joachim Low is the head coach of the German national side and he has been in that position since 2006. Even prior to Low´s appointment as the manager of Germany in 2006, he had already been selected as the assistant manager in 2004. This means that Joachim Low has seen and worked alongside Lukas Podolski throughout his entire career in Germany.
“He is a unique specimen; no one can really replace him. For me it will be a beautiful moment but a sad one because he was one of the greatest players ever to come out of Germany´´
“We have gone over many hurdles, many tournaments, disappointments but also the biggest joy as coach and player with the World Cup victory in 2014. So the stage tomorrow is appropriate. Germany against England is the right atmosphere´´ Joachim Low said.
Deciding to retire from the international stage is a common thing that players who reach a certain age in their careers decide to do and considering the fact that Podolski is 32 years old, it’s not surprising at all to see it happen.
Podolski recently decided to join the Japanese club Vissel Kobe. The veteran player confirmed this transfer through his twitter account as Podolski stated that he wants a new challenge and it will certainly be a huge boost for the Japanese league, the J1 League as they have not attracted any real big non-Asian football figure since Diego Forlan´s arrival on January of 2014, when he joined Cerezo Osaka.
